About

Daily Path is an on-the-ground map installation and experimental guidebook to the city of Portland following a day in the life of residents who rely on walking as their primary mode of transportation (either by choice or necessity).  The Daily Path project seeks to paint a portrait of our city and its residents with glimpses into the everyday, pedestrian experience of four diverse individuals who live, work, shop, and play here.

For one week in May, 2021 four car-free Portlanders tracked their daily walking paths through the city.  Daily Path physically maps each person’s route with painted lines on the sidewalks – revealing an authentic Portland experience.  These residents become your guides in a unique companion map and website.

This project takes inspiration from work such as Mundane Journeys by Kate Procrass, Atlas Obscura, the Boston Freedom Trail, guidebooks by Rebecca Solnit, Portland Brick by Ayumi Horie and Elise Pepple, and tactile paving paths for visually impaired in Europe.

You can experience Daily Path by following the lines found around the Portland peninsula.  See the complete walking routes and learn more about your guides in the limited-edition guidebook (available in November) or by exploring this website.

Please note this is a temporary art installation - the paths will fade over time.
